Rare notes are usually bought from coin/currency stores, shows, ebay, online auctions, etc. Every once in a while they just manage to find their way into your hands from circulation... but don't hold your breath on that one! And yes, people do just march into the bank and buy quantities of notes to search through hoping to find a keeper.

A lot of what I find as a teller is of little value to any collector or hobbyist. Every once in a while, maybe once a week I may find something worth it. Id go into the bank and ask for a decent amount if you want to try to search for them, but I know some tellers have a keen eye looking through them. You're most likely going to find something if you get the money from the vault before it hits teller hands.

Just my Two Cents

I don't know how true this is, but I'm guessing $50 bills may be the best to search through..

This is because they don't circulate very often so quite are few older ones are still out there, and the print runs on these older notes are, well, pathetic..

Some of the older star notes can go for somewhat big bucks..

I have a few collections of currency on the go. My main ones are Canadian and U.S. banknotes with errors. The entire
Canadian collection (with the exception of two notes) was found in circulation (I'm Canadian, btw). I have almost a dozen mismatched serial number/prefix notes that I received in change or found while searching notes at work.

My U.S. collection was entirely purchased from dealers or from ebay auctions.

Finding "rare" notes in circulation or in stacks is possible but I do know of several collectors, who in over 30 years of searching stacks have never found an error note.

If you are considering collecting "rare" notes, you might want to decide what types you like and advertise that you
are interested in purchasing them. But, you're going to have to have deep pockets.

I have quite a few notes but do not consider myself a note collector nor do I think I have anything rare or worth much over face. I just keep what ever I find fascinating from circulation. I love seeing the looks on the kids faces when you show the the difference a star note has and then when I give them one. I am sure others probably say that I am a fool for keeping all these notes but I have every person in my family from the younger kids to adults looking at their bills now because I have shown them star notes and other little things. So hopefully I have sparked some interest in future collectors for just a small amount of money involved and that really makes these notes that are worthless to others almost priceless to me

Right you are Bryan..... value and investment are not what collecting is all about.... I think that personal enjoyment and satisfaction are the primary factors associated with collecting.

Depending on what a person's definition of "rare" is, I might suggest that you will never find a 'rare' note in circulation, or at a bank...... To me, "rare" means 10 notes or less exist of a certain variety, where most folks here consider "rare" to mean hundreds of thousands of notes existing.

Totally agree with the last two posts. If someone were looking through my collection they would stop continuously to ask "what in the world is he saving that for?" A lot of the notes (even coins) have value only to me.

On the topic of "rare" I agree that rare is used incorrectly in most cases. Rare to me means that few examples remain in existence, like when a person says an animal is rare they mean that animal has nearly been wiped off the face of the Earth. What we mean by "rare" is usually "uncommon" or "hard to find" I suppose.
