of your Confederate notes!

Give us a background on where you found them, how much you spent to aquire them, etc. These reflect one of the most important times in our nations history, and this thread is aimed on keeping that past in the forefront of our minds.

Here are the only two in my collection:

February 17th, 1864 $10

I found this (and others) advertised in a collectors magazine, whose name escapes me. I believe I got it for about $40. It has a quarter inch tear midway on the left. Serial number: 77839

February 17th, 1864 $50

Cool-Confederate-Notes!--Post-Yours!
I bought this on May 28th, 2011 at a flea market for $20. It is missing two corners and has numerous pinholes and medium-sized holes. Serial number: 39798

Alabama 50 Cent Fractional Currency, issued January 1, 1863. Not in the best of shape with ink burn on the serial number and another chunk missing on the right side but I got it cheap from my local coin shop's bid board. I think I paid $1 about 6 months ago

From my gallery: my only genuine Confed note, a "blueback" $5, bought off ebay back in 2003. Dated Feb 17 1864, No. 60685.

I've never studied the CSA notes, but looking at these, I have some questions -
1. ACG - who is the portrait on the $50, please ?
2. Fuzzy & SAP - your $5 - I wasn't aware of any "treaty of peace" between the CSA & the USA. I wonder what became of that ?
3. Fuzzy & SAP - your $5 - I'm wondering who that portrait is ?

I suppose my questions are more historical than numismatic, but, balancing that, I'm giving you the chance to display your research ...

The 1864 $50 note features the President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis. Did you think it was Lincoln? If so, it is an easy mistake to make! The two men looked very similar.

The chap on ACG's $50 is Jefferson Davis, first and only President of the Confederacy.

The chap on our $5 notes is Christopher Memminger, the Confederate Secretary to the Treasury for most of the Confederacy's existence and the person holding that office at the time these notes were issued.

As for the "Treaty of Peace" clause, there never was such a treaty. But the signing of a treaty, recognising the Confederacy's right to secede from the Union and exist as a separate country, was the ultimate goal of the war as far as the Confederacy was concerned. This clause looked forward to that time when the Confederacy had "won" and the peace was stable enough to last for at least two years - a situation which never eventuated.

But the clause enabled the Confederate government to avoid having to redeem their notes in actual silver dollars straight away, since they legally didn't have to until "two years after the Treaty". As it became more and more obvious that such a treaty was never eventuate, the value of the Confederate dollar collapsed.

Very cool notes guys. I like seeing them. I just bought my first 2 Confederate notes (via ebay) from reputable guys I have dealt with before. I really love the history behind them. I will be looking to get some more in the future.

I'm guessing reproduction notes are out of the question? (they look very real though)

I got all of these in a collection that I bought 2 or 3 months ago so I can't really say what each one cost me.

This $50 is in rough shape but it is a 1st series.
