Hi there I got this in a job lot.
On one side has a bust of Queen Anne with pearls hanging from the back of her hair.
It has
ANNA.DG.MAG.BRI.FR.ET.HIB:REG.
Written around the edge.
On the other side has a standing Britannia with what looks like an olive branch in her right hand and a spear and shield in her left.
She appears to be on a beach with ships out at sea and an army on the beach.
Around the outside of the medallion reads
COMPOSITIS VEN.........I can't read the rest.
At the bottom is the roman numerals mdccxiii or 1753.
It is in the bottom of a small silver dish with hallmarks.
Should I have a crack at getting it out or leave it there?
Any ideas?
Also the Bust is very raised and has .I.C. on the underside of the shoulder

in that condition as long as it isn't cleaned it should bring in about $400 This medal, commemorating the Peace of Utrecht, was struck by authority and distributed at public expense to members of both the House of Lords and the House of Commons and to other persons. The difficulties of the negotiations for peace having been surmounted, the treaties were signed at Utrecht in 1713. England and France signed the Treaty of Peace and also a Treaty of Commerce. Separate treaties for the States of Holland, the King of Portugal, the King of Prussia and the Duke of Savoy were also signed on the same day. The treaty between England and Spain was postponed for some weeks and the Emperor's Peace with France was not signed until the following year. I forget the date I know everything youll find about it says 1713 but I believe it was sometime right after the end of ww2 so lets say 194? 6 thats all I know

It has been cleaned But it still looks brand new.
Not a bad find in a bunch of scrap I paid less than spot for .
Is there anyway of dating hallmarks? Because the medallion must be at least as old as the dish it is set in.
I'll have a hunt arround tonite and see what I can dig up

What you have is made in the city of Chester and the date letter is for 1738.
A very nice find and, as Chester silver is highly sought after, highly desirable.

Who's a lucky boy then?

Thanks for that Bob.
I'm glad I didn't try and remove it from the dish.
It would have ruined a nice piece
