I am thinking of two categories:

1. Potential value growth
2. Beauty

Would appreciate thoughts...

Cheers!

Will be hard to recommend anything here ... First of all, don't even think of buying medals "because they may be more valuable later". That is a concept which does not work well with coins, and certainly not with modern medals. Pretty much everybody can have medals made and sell them; people will buy them because of the designs or because they are nice reminders of some specific occasion.

Of course you could focus on the metal content, and collect silver or gold medals only. This way the value would go up or down, more or less loosely based on the metal price. As for "beauty", that is even more difficult in my opinion. What I may find beautiful could be boring or ugly in your opinion. :) Here are, as a starting point, several websites that deal with (primarily modern) medals:

I don't by medals but if I will it would be for history and if this comes with beauty or a precious metal content then it is a bonus.... but still this is my opinion

This oldtimer concurs with Chrisild; especially, as regards investment. That said, the 19th century and older medals, classics, tend to hold their value. Buy the book(s) before the medal. Older auction catalogues and archival websites like those of Stack and Heritage provide much insight into this branch of numismatics. This being the sesquicentennial year of the Civil War, medals from that era may start climbing in price. However, many investors are generally wise to buy items when the market is cold. Ultimately, you might do more exploring so as to focus on an appealing theme, subject matter, engraver, what have you ...

On a relative basis, early American medals are cheap compared to what is paid for US tokens and coins. Few are graded and many are relatively scarce. I have a personal interest in Bolen medals and many have come to market lately and most are just quite rare so I'm both watching and buying selectively. Medals in my opinion are one of the few areas where bargins can be had if your paying attention. Many have numismatic importance and most are just plain beautiful. Augustus Saint-Gaudens, George Morgan, Charles Barber...etc etc all made medals that are more beautiful than the coinage they are more well known for. Personally I believe the time to collect things is when others aren't as you have access to the best material at the best price. So while others are chasing bullion this area is quite overlooked at the moment. But as an investment I would make it only a small bet here. Buy what you like and enjoy...if it goes up all the better.

Forgot to mention that link....Karl Goetz medals. The website does a wonderful job showing his work and I have always enjoyed the imagery of his work. I already collect too many things or I would attempt a set of these.
