I cannot off hand remember, but is there something not the norm. going on with this date. The thicker vertical 1 and the downward slant of the 873 ?
Lousy scans as far as the coin goes but should suffice for the date. Thanks

There are 70 known obverse dies for the "open 3" date, so the date position varies a lot.
I can't see an RPD on your coin. The thick numerals of the 1870s throw me off too.

DV

Thanks. I don't see anything myself in hand.
It was mostly the 1 that I was concerned about.
It's overall height, thickness and it's touching the 8 etc.
Most likely nothing but ?
In the process of grading a whitman 9003.
Well, missing a few :) 70,75,77 and 85. 08 and 09-s's
Why the 75 and 85 are missing is strange. Oh well, no biggie. Have the 3 eagles (no 56:) though. They probably threw it away because of the No hole deal on the whitmans :)

There are a few 1872 IHCs with the 1 touching the 8 too. I can only guess why some dates are set more tight.
Have you checked the 1871 for the "shallow N"? That's a good variety too. Shame about that 1856 getting tossed.

Thanks. No idea what to look for on the 71 "N" ?

Here's an image I put together, comparing the "bold N" to the "shallow N" reverse.
The depth of the N in ONE (a.) is the main diagnostic, but the angular serifs (c.) on the E should be there too.

I think it's the bold N
The N looks thicker and raised more than the Shallow.
The middle E serif looks more like the shallow though.
It's a below the waist/above the knee shallow I guess :)
