Trying to sort out my Can. quarters and which ones to sell as silver or which ones to sell as coins. Will get to all eventually (1912 through 1967) Plus some Unc's. from the 60's, 70's and 80's. On the 1953, is there any difference in value between the small and large date ? And also, can there be an SS 53 large date or an NSS 53 small date ? Hard to tell on my 2 coins. Thanks. Tam Valued Member United States 200 Posts	Posted 06/02/2011 6:18 pm Doesn't seem to be much noticeable difference in value between the two, Indian. The only thing I can offer, until others chime in, is that the differences {outside of the shoulder fold issue}, are the relief, rim, and something about the caribou's neck. neweden Valued Member Canada 272 Posts	Posted 06/02/2011 6:50 pm There are only 2 varieties on the 53 quarter that have any significance.. 1953 NSF LD and SF SD.. The 1953 NSF LD (No shoulder fold Large date)does not reach any great value until it reaches MS 63 where the value is around 25.00. The same coin SF SD (shoulder fold small date) has a book value of 35.00. The difference at MS 65 becomes 175.00 for the former and 475 for the latter. The way to tell the small date and large date is the 9 of 19 is closer on the small date to the caribou antler on the reverse. Report this Post to the Staff

Indian1 Pillar of the Community United States 3640 Posts	Posted 06/02/2011 9:22 pm Thanks. The large date is the NSF but would only grade VF max. The small date is also NSF - VF also max. When I put both of the coins besides one another the difference in the size of the date is very obvious. Did not really see much difference though in the distance of the 9 from the tip of the antler. Found two nice coins in the folder though. No biggies but MS's (1965 and 1966) Very nice luster and some toning on the 1966. Report this Post to the Staff
