I found one reference to a BSIS with star in right field in the LRBC...1148-49 (Constantius II and Constans), but what I'm wondering is....... does the mint mark on this coin have another letter after the last S in BSIS?

Perhaps an M?......or am I in left field?

I don't find anything like that in the LRBC or in Helvetica's excel.

Regards

It could be RIC Siscia 352 or 361, both BSIS zigzag (something like a retrograde Z).

BSISM Siscia 381, a variation on the mint mark listed as scarce.

Been checking this one for some time now.
It looks like Siscia 351 which has just the BSIS in ex. while yours does appear to have something after that.

Then saw a picture of RIC Siscia 361 which has the zig zag after the BSIS but the bust looks different.

Check the pictures on this page, it might help.

Agree with echizento, 'M' looks very likely, certainly more likely than the other known types:

BSIS dot S dot
BSIS zigzag
BSISD
BSISL

The 5th character reminded me very much of a sunburst at fist but not been able to find one of those on Fel Temp coin although they were used at Siscia on other coins.

Thanks for the link colo. I don't have the RIC and these pics are good.

The 361 zigzag is a good possibility and 381 is a good possibility from the description about the BSISM mark.

Its unfortunate that the strike on my coin is just far enough off center to make it difficult to say exactly what it is.

Such is fate.

I got it at my local coin shop for 10 dollars. He doesn't sell ancients but it was just laying around.

It's always fun looking into it.

Also is that a star in the center?

I was looking at the middle and thought I could see a star - that would rule out the BSISM mintmark though so I discarded it. Usually stars are located to the right of the soldiers body, not between him and the captive / horseman.

It awesome sometimes how much fun you can get out of researching a $10 coin
