I have a fairly full collection of Roman coins (although I can't seem to get enough). This coin, however, I'm not so sure of. I believe it is a coin of Octavian before he became first Roman emperor, issued to deify Julius Caesar. Can anyone confirm?

I am thinking this could be an issue of Roman Alexandria. I think you may be on the right track.

I have a tetradrachm, but issued in the reign of Tiberias, with radiate head of DIVVS AUGUSTUS reverse.

Your coin nevertheless, looks like Julius Caesar, and so would have been issued in the reign of Augustus, with Julius Caesar deified.

While admittedly my knowledge of the coins of Julius Caesar and earlier is limited - I find the imagery on this coin very crude. It's not like anything that would have emminated from the Imperial mints. A provincial issue of some kind? - Possibly.
An ourtright forgery (maybe contempory) - more likely.

I found a similar looking coin. A Dupondius minted possibly in Gaul or Italy by Augustus in 38 BC (CR535/v1, RPC620v). The obverse reads CAESAR DIVI F, while the reverse reads DIVOS IVLIVS. I'm inclined to believe this is not a modern day fake, but then again, that may be wishful thinking.

I agree its highly unlikely this would have come from an Imperial mint, its probably too stylised to even have come from Alexandria, this does not rule out some of the smaller mints though.

Even though my better judgement is screaming modern fake I'm not convinced and it could be from a provincial mint or even be imitative.

I think the following deserve considering, these are style matches only:

Mauritanian area (libya)http://www.coinproject.com/coin_det...?coin=284949

Imitative from Gaul http://www.flickr.com/photos/ahala_...616089488748

Prob another Imitative http://numismatics.org/collection/1944.100.73764

The pitting on yours worries me a bit but more so if you got it from the same source as the other three coins you have put up recently - its better to trust the seller not the coin in cases like this.
