Hi. I'm new here, and am trying to find out something for a friend (older man who has no computer), and hoping you can help. I don't have a picture available, but hopefully I can tell you enough to get an opinion.

Anyway, it's a Susan B Anthony dollar. What's different is that, even though it's in "good" or "very good" condition, it has nickel plating only on one side (I'm guessing it's nickel...as I understand they weren't silver plated). The other side is uncoated. I'm not sure of what the center is (copper, or some other alloy? I'm definitely an amateur at this). Whatever the core is, the coin only got plated on one side. It is obvious that the other side didn't just "wear off," but was never plated to begin with.

Is this an unusual situation? We're just curious about whether there are others like this coin around.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Without a picture, it is very hard to tell. Is there any way you can post a picture or scan the coin?

Hi, Mystified, welcome to our forum.

Here is a link to a discussion about another Susan B. Anthony with a similar problem.

Thanks so much for both replies. I understand how a pic would be better. However, I followed Trigger's link and I think the key to my question lies in a reply in that thread (posted by Bryan1315). It says:

(Quote) I dont know how to tell if it has been altered to remove the clad layer unless it was done with acid and it etched the coin, if it was done some other way then I have no idea how you would tell. The part that bothers me is both sides are the same way, usually you see one side with the clad layer and the other without unless it has been altered. I am in no way saying this is written in stone, I am just saying most of them I have seen had one side with the clad layer and the other without. (End Quote)

It sounds to me like having one side not clad is not all that uncommon, and wouldn't have any real value. In any case, I don't see this guy too often, but can pass on the info to him when I do see him again.

Anyway, thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I do appreciate it
