Wow, that is really cool. What year and what country? That wasn't ever U.S. penny?

In surprisingly good condition, congratulations.

I'm still learning to type-code coins of this era, and I will check it through and see if I can also make it a 9b. I certainly agree that it is from York mint. There are a lot of mules (now known generally as 9c) about this period and I am a little suspicious that this might be one of them. In this case "mule" would not be rare in the modern sense, but just a variation dictated by the vast number of coins, and therefore dies, being produced at the time.

I'll work on it when I have more time and post my diagnosis in due course! Not that I doubt you, but it will be a learning experience for me.

Bill.

Will do!

I'm still learning, but will do my best and will also include my reasoning.

Are you able to examine it under a powerful lens and look at the King's Crown - the side bits that stick up, do they split into two or three parts at the top? When I look at them on the illustration, I can make either. The "technical" words are bifoliate and trifoliate. There are numerious varieties of both versions but the precise shape of the crown is important. A careful sketch of the crown might be useful.

I might need a few days, but I'll work on it as soon as I get time.

Bill.

it's a trifoliate crown and has a star on the breast. in hand the details show better than in the pic.
