Alright for those of you who haven't seen this thread yet (which I don't expect you to have) here it is.

https://goccf.com/t/90156

I had some great help discovering what this coin was, now I need to know what grade it is! I will be selling this so the more accurately I can grade it, the less ripped off I'll be! My guess is that it's at least AU55, but I have a very hard time distinguishing AU from MS when it comes to gold. So please help me!

Thanks in advance.

It looks low AU to me as it appears that there is wear on the leaves in the top photos. It also looks cleaned to me as there appears to be patina around the devices and shiny fields with what look like hairlines.

Was it mounted below the dragon?

I'm seeing wear on all the high areas, with the details on several of the leaves worn down. I would give it a grade of AU-50.

I can see what you mean about the cleaning, but I think it's actually just improper care. This thing was left loose in a shoe box for at least the last 15 years. As far as the mounting goes, it's possible but I doubt it. It's only on that side and not all the way through. It looks to me like it was dropped at some point.

I'm not doubting low AU at all here by the way. I have no clue what the high/low marks are on the coin and how good of a strike it is vs actual wear. My guess is that it's probably wear since it's keeping conditions were poor.

Is it a rare year or something? All the other 4 Meiji's I'm finding are not close to that. Maybe I'm looking at older prices or something. I'm going to hate trying to sell this thing raw ;/
