It's from the Mauryan Empire, one of the first ancient Indian civilization to strike coins, circa 320-190 BC. The denomination is called a "karshapana". There are many examples among these zeno.ru pages.

I think they have worked out some kind of chronology of the various hand-stamps, to narrow down the date range and possibly mint location. But I don't have any good reference books for this series.

These things are very common. Most have 5 symbols clearly defined. I would estimate $5 - $10 on the US ebay would be about right

$5 to $10 each for ancient silver coins makes them very collectible. I have about 5 or six myself, but I have no good book reference for them.

Are there any good book references available for karshapana or for short 'pana'? If they are fairly common, there should be some good sources (probably in India), where the coins themselves are available. Immediately the prospect of dishonesty on the supply side is worth considering, although I have yet to see a confirmed fake.

I'm not aware of a good reference for these coins - although I do have a few. There may be a specialist one in India but I don't think so because the coins that get submitted to Zeno are never comletely nailed down to a good reference book - either that or there just isn't an active member there that owns one.

I suspect they are cheap because of the problems with exact identification, there's not really much to go on - and they are not spectularly attractive - more in the interesting category.

Yeah, pretty cheap. $5 dollars, about the size of a dime.
