I'm tough on grading these and I'd call this EF-45 to low AU-50. There is wear on the leaves on the reverse that is a little more than what would be acceptable for a high AU and some light weakness on the first feather of the obverse. The fileds on both sides are very nice and free of distracting tick or bag marks. I suspect there's been a light cleaning also.

I can see no AU58 now that I looked closer. As far as cleaned. Who knows ? How many 100 to 150 yr. old coins have not been cleaned at one time one way or another. I am going to have to learn to take pro pics. of coins. Every coin I scan that is posted is cleaned. I had a few come back from the TPG's as not cleaned. Surprised many. Curious, please grade this coin below. Thanks.

This one looks more like a 58 to me................................ Hold your breath for a second, I wouldn't get my hopes up, but I think this one has a small chance of being the snow-1 1888/7! I've never owned one, but I've studied the diagnostics to some extent as I had them on my cherrypick list. I'm most likely wrong, but I would certainly get a second opinion just to be sure. If it is an 1888/7 snow-1, this is a 5 figure coin easy in that grade. Some better pics of the obverse would help too.

We'd specifically need better pics of the obverse rim right outside of the "TE" in united, the second to the bottom feather in the headress, and the bottom loop of the last "8".

The more I look at it, the more I think it has a decent chance! It is such an incredibly rare coin though. You may want to shoot these photos over to Rick Snow!

Your 1861 has more detail than the 1888/7 S-1, and it's easy to look up that coin. (AU55) The 1888/7 has weak strike in the feathers, and rarities get more lenient grading imo.

Do you own that one indian? Just found it in the Heritage archives. I got the impression from the post that he owned it. Another diagnostic is the Die Cud on the rim above the "TE" in united. It's good to know that I can see the diagnostics without knowing in advance that it is a rare variety. From a grading perspective, the 1888 definitely looks less circulated to me than the 1861.

Johnny 54321 What I see in the feather tips is weak strike not wear on the 1888?

Thanks all. No, this is not my coin. DV nailed it. This is an AU55 photo grade shot. Other remarks mixed on the grade but just wanted an idea to compare to mine. I realize the weak feathers on the 88 etc. but the overall wear would seem to put the 61 way past EF40/45/AU50. I felt overall this 88 was a match for mine grade wise. Also taking into consideration the hardness issue with a CN as compared to a copper as far as strike detail. I just double checked my own F 88. No go on the variety.

Yeah...I was just comparing details I can see. Too bad the 1888/7 isn't yours--I've also searched for one, in vain. I'm not very good at judging AU coins from just a pic, probably since most coin I get are F12-EF45.

I thought maybe that you saw the same page on this 88 coin :) Stay tuned. Indians and flying eagles coming up for sale at a forum near you. This 61 will be priced as an AU53/55 slider. I have already accurately graded all of the others. This one was my only questionable one. And once again (that's twice now :) I was incorrect.

I've probably looked at every 1888/7 that has a photo. I wanted to know all the markers when I was searching for one. The die probably had a very short life--but I'll keep looking. That's a nice '61. It's hard to find the CuNi in good grades.
