I shared this story on another board but decided since one member was telling his story of what he did for their 60th birthday I would tell what I always do for halloween around here. I always have 2 big bowls, one full of candy and one full of change (with a few morgans, sba, and halfs mixed in) and I will allow each kid to grab a handfull out of each bowl to put in their bag, and I will tell them to be sure and check the coins real good because there are some of the coins in there worth more than face value. I also keep about 2 rolls of SBA's beside the bowls for the little kids and I will throw a couple of them in their bag after they have gotten their handfull out of each bowl because their hands are so small chances of them getting some of the bigger coinage is pretty slim. I like to see their face light up when they see they will also be receiving money along with candy and have often wondered if any of them started collecting because of something they found in their trick or treet bag. I was thinking about next year giving the older kids a choice of a handfull from the coin bowl or a handfull out of the candy bowl and see how many will take the coins and how many will take the candy. I will of course still do the same thing as I have done with the little ones from around 8 and under. I was wondering if anyone else does this on haloween or any other holiday like this. I have actually been doing this long before I started collecting myself its just the now some of the SBA's are morgans instead of all SBA's. the reason I do this is because I remember when I was a small kid (when it was safe to trick or treat around the whole town not just your neighborhood) we would walk to one house which seemed like miles and miles away just because he had this big bucket of pennies that he would allow you to reach in and get a handfull and every year it would be a treat watching my grandfather 9who was a collector from as long as I remember) dumping out all of our candy to get to our pennies so he could look through them to get what he wanted and would give us a nickel for them. Anyone else do anything like this or have any stories like it?

I've shared this story before, but for those who haven't heard it- here goes. There was a lady who lived down the street from me when I was a kid who would give out pennies to the trick or treaters. She would have a big bowl full of cents and a spoon, and you were allowed one spoonful. Sounds good until you realized the spoon was one of those dinky wooden ones that came with those ice cream sundae cups! You were lucky to get Two Cents!

wow at least we did get a whole handful when I was a kid. This guy had a 5 gallon bucket full of pennies and would just tell you to reach in with one hand and get as many as you can

How times have changed.

When I was a kid I remember going from house to house collecting candy...safe as could be. One house seemed closed up as if no one was home. I walked up to the door and there was a bowl of pennies on the porch and a note beside it that said "Take a few".

I sat down on the steps of the porch and decided that two was a couple so three must be a few... Then again maybe four might be still considered a few... As I sat there pondering this dilemma I spotted a nickel in the bowl. Dilemma solved, I put back the pennies I had taken in exchange for the one nickel and left feeling I had found a treasure.

I've never forgot that Halloween, people were honest and did the right thing because it was the right thing to do in those days.

I also remember the shock some 20 years later, having a birthday party for one of my children and inviting the neighbour kids. They proceded to empty all the candy out of the all the bowls in the room into their pockets as soon as they arrived.

I can only imagine how long a bowl of coins would last on a deserted porch these days.

I too used to way, way back give out coins and candy for Holloween. Nowadays in a big city area like where I am at, that is not to good an idea. Most people play like they are not home, turn off the lights and I know many that watch TV with a gun near by just in case.

I was gonna do this on Halloween this year.....and forgot while doing everything else to get ready.... I was thinking, it would be really nice to give out something different, maybe worn Mercury dimes, or even indian head pennies, if I could get hold of a bunch for not too much money. But then, we went through 8 bags of 150 pieces each - we have an enormous amount of kids in the neighborhood. so, I might just give one to every 5th or so kid...lucky they will be !! Anyway, there is still Xmas, another good time to give away some money and start a few into collecting.
Rest in Peace

Bryan, Just want to say that what you do is very commendable. Very nice of you to do that for kids.

Our town is still small enough that most homes are open to "trick or treaters." We had roughly 75 kids stop by for candy this Halloween.
