So my point there, why is platinum not up to 5 grand an oz. yet?

It doesn't matter how rare something is until you have someone who needs it for something. Water is plentiful, until you run out in the desert, then it's worth $100 a glass. Platinum is rare, but most uses for it can use substitutes.

I've watched about 10-12 of his videos now and this was one of the most interesting (Silver-there is no upper limit): http://wn.com/w0tm?upload_time=all_...derby=rating

Platinum price will rise as pollution control systems become more regulated and mandated. This metal is heavily influenced by sales numbers in the auto sector as well. Nothing really replaces these metals (nothing that costs less) in their use as catalytic materials. Anyhow, the ups and downs there are fairly well known.

Palladium came into its own when it was found that it can substitute for platinum in auto catalytic converters. Prior to that time, it was actually an annoyance for anyone trying to refine platinum. Since catalysis is pretty specific in the things it will do, they probably use a combo of Pt and Pd, as well as other metals, in catalytic converters these days. Industrial pollution treatment schemes also use both of these metals for cleaning up combustion by-products.

This all just reinforces my belief in silver. If it is now as rare as they say, and used in many different facets, it will keep moving up....

Gotta wonder if there will be any attempts to recover some of that land fill silver, as there must be millions of tons of it out there.

Curious any realistic low cost way to find and recover it?

well count the products lots of old photos some mirrors way spread out better luck with old switches and contacts .best to store them up before dumping. one of the neat properties of silver is that it is the best conductor of electricity even when tarnished, so usually plated over copper ( ha it gets that nice toned look that some people like so much) ebay has books on recovery and lots of people buying selling scrap circuit boards some with gold plating be cause it does not corrode. sorry low cost easy

very old sailors (didn't die )
from bad water .they would hang a silver coin in the water barrels on long voyages to keep it fresh.

a silver coin or spoon in a pitcher of milk would prevent bacteria in the day of inferior refrigeration. and newborn eyedrops contained silver for decades.

I find that coin being used to kill bacteria in the water or milk fascinating as well, and yet no one can explain why, that is truly something....

Probably why it is being used in medical field now as well as mentioned above, as if it kills bacteria, it makes sense that many tools and instruments be made from silver....

Way too expensive, and would grow legs daily. Bad enough they steal forceps for roach clips.

There was a silver recovery company here last week that was busted for dumping cyanide toxic waste down manholes and car wash bays. I guess its too expensive to properly dispose of the waste. They were recovering silver from xray films.

I read that silver denatures (bends) the proteins in the cell membranes of bacteria, which prevents them from reproducing. Since their life span is quite short, pretty soon they are all gone.

I don't know if silver or silver ions have any effect on viruses. They might. If so, then that would be another boost for medical silver.
