After reading a few recent posts on the 1916, I began to wonder if it's possible to distinguish very worn examples from the 1917?

As an example, take a look at this coin being sold as a 1916--is it possible to tell, and what are the diagnostics? I have added a detail of the head to the seller's pic.

Thanks!

I would have to say without doubt it is a 1917 based solely on the extreme strength of the shield beading. I think the rim is worn too far into the rim to make any determination there.

I just read up on diagnostics on the 1916, and wondered the same thing. Also the hair detail and drapery near the feet seem more like 1917. There is also a bit of spin on my post, Check this out

Ouch, I guess that is probably one reason why Heritage no longer auctions raw coins

No doubt in my mind that one is a 1917

Yeah, but a cost-free education for me.
Rest in Peace

Yeah, Heritage blew it on that one. I've seen that link before and posted it in the CU forums. They've also inadvertently had dateless 1917s in "PCGS 1916" slabs. They aren't perfect, but they do have an infinitely better track record than ebay...:-)
