Hello All,

I bought a large amount of silver from a seller on ebay a while back. As silver climbed, I sold it all for a nice profit...except for one large coin. Its a large, gold clad covered coin in a plastic case. On the front is a woman walking, torch in right hand, branch in left. On the reverse side is an eagle. The front says LIBERTY across the top, and in the lower right is the date 1995. On the reverse, it says UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and right below that it says ONE HALF POUND GOLDEN EAGLE. At the bottom, is says IN GOD WE TRUST. Right below that, in what appears to be a partial sun, is what looks like a mint mark. Said mark is a small square with a w in it, and an upside down w directly beneath it. Finally, on the ridge of the coin, it has two areas that have some writing... one says 24 kt E.O.P, and the other one has what looks like a serial number of 10961.

No where does it say that its silver. So... is it silver, or did I get cheated?

Thanks!

Gary

Is this the coin?
8-Oz-Silver-Coin?

I believe E.0.P. means electroplated (gold)

After looking around I have noticed your coin selling right now for about $400.00. (ONE HALF POUND GOLDEN EAGLE) The seller on ebay has 100% feedback with over 3000 positive responses. So you may be in the safe zone here. I dont know much about coins but I thought this may comfort you until someone else comes around and confirms it's legit.

Crystal nailed it. From what I understand you do have a silver coin.

That is what we would call a replica of an American Eagle....

I had one of these exact coins in my watch list on ebay a few days back. Started over 400, no bids. Then 395 free shipping, no bids. Then 328 free shipping. I said it won't last long at that price, and it sold the next day or two....

Tricky some of these half pound coins, considering a troy pound has 12 oz. and the other avoirdupois is 16 oz. to a pound. The mint took into account most associate a pound as 16 oz. seems like on this particular coin made at 8 oz.. It is silver, 8 oz. plated in gold by the way EPG as Crystal mentioned....

Trying to personally stay away from the larger say 5 plus oz. coins, but I like that particular one, as I believe it to have a good resale value for the fact that many like that design. It is 8 oz. of pure silver, and a bit of gold as well, not much if even a gram however. Nice center piece to collection perhaps for some....

Yes, crystalH, that's it! I figured it was silver because the seller had 100% rating, but the buyer I sold my silver said since it didn't say .999 silver, he wouldn't buy it.

What a day... had the coin tested by a buyer and a jeweler. Buyer wasn't convinced. Jeweler thought it was "probably" .999 pure, but he wasn't certain. Jeweler told buyer if he did want it, to not pay more than 100.00. Wow...

Well, I found out the coin was made by the Washington Mint, who no longer exists...sort of. They've actually changed names and are now the New York Mint. They could provide no info on the coin. I guess the only thing left is to have it melted down to see exactly what it is.
