I know there a few different 1931 die varities, I have 2 1931 pennies and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on their type/variety and also if either of them are rare. The first one to me looks like most other pre 1936 pennies, whereas the second has a clearly different reverse. Any input would be appreciated.

The first looks quite standard, but the secoond one to me looks like the dropped '1 variety?
If so then yes it is very rare, I think even rarer than the 1930 in availability, ofcourse I think the value is a lot less though lol
Maybe some more experienced peeps could shed some real light on it for ya though haha

Hi dcoin, Yes the 1st coin is the standard 31, the 2nd is a dropped 1 variety but is the more common english obverse variety, the Indian obverse type is the really rare 1.

The 2nd coin looks to have a heap of die cracks running all over the place on the reverse side & maybe some die clash as well, can you get a more clear picture of that ?

The first thing I look on every '31 is the obverse type.
That's some reverse for die cracks! What is up with the inner beads between "Comm..." and "Penny"?

Thanks for all the comments, unfortunately the 2nd 1931 penny appears to have scratches on its reverse not die cracks (as they are quite wide/deep compared with die cracks I have witnessed on other pennies I have). The inner beads between Comm and Penny on the second one appear to have just merged with the rim (due to wear/circulation I assume). I will probably keep both (as they are 2 different varities) but am I right in saying that they would both be worth about $5 or less? (I would grade the first coin VF-gVF and the second coin F-gF)
