OK so I have read a couple of other post and the information seems to be sporadic. If there isn't one already, can someone take the time to explain in full detail how to clean a copper coin.

What I'm asking for is everything from just a very light touch of verdigris to the caked on green muck on some coins.

How long to leave the coins in?

What to look for to know when to take it out?

What to do after pulling it out to getting it into a flip or airtight. From picking at parts to maybe just a water bath.

I keep reading posts and it seems all the information is there its just to scrambled though 10-20 posts. It would be great if there was a post we could always refer someone to for any type of copper cleaning techniques.

Hopefully someone has one already and will be able to post the link.

The only one I've ever done in olive oil is an Indian Head cent that was darker than night when I got it. Unfortunately, I have no "before" pics. The whole coin looked like the darkest areas remaining.

It spent 18 months in olive oil, changed periodically.

Olive oil is very problematic because it's inconsistent in quality, chain-length distribution and acidity. I've done my share of experimentation with it and seen results like Dave posted many times over. Personally, I never recommend it because it so slow (i.e. 18 months) and it will change the patina.

Check out Richards thread, he is taking the proper approach to conservation. The coins he's working on could soak in olive oil for a couple years with almost no improvement. With better methods he's making progress in as little as 24 hours with no negative effects to worry about.

I am reading it now. I guess I still have questions due to the fact that I'm new to working with coppers:
What is this sonic cleaner you speak of and what does it do?
Will acetone or xylene affect my coin negatively at all?

That was before you, BadThad.

The solution would be different today.

Here are a few suggestions.
1. Go to the Search tab and try coin cleaning or Olive Oil, or cleaning coins or Copper coin cleaning or similar.
2. Go to Google and type in Copper coin cleaning. There are 166,000 results.
3. Go to Google and type in coin cleaning and get 39,600,000 results.
Now if you do number 3. above and check out one result every 5 minutes, that's 12 per hour, 288 per day or 105,264 per year approximately.
One thing to remember is that using most man made products the results can vary extensively. By that I mean the contents of Olive Oil, the Acidity, miscellaneous ingrediants can vary by manufacturer. Go to any store and read the lables on Olive Oils. For example the one I'm holding now says 22% tital fat 14g, saturated fat 10%, calories 120. Other notations are such as 85% Mediteranean Seeds blend.
Now if you check you'll find all of the above varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. This means what results one person gets can be excessively different when you try the same thing.
Be carefull with what people tell you. Read the lables and if not clear, don't use that product on coins. You may drink it, put it on foods, but that is your stomach, but not on a nice coin.
