Greetings Coin Forum, I am a novice coin collector who accidentally inherited about 25 silver dollars. I have taken this coin to several coin stores and have received appraisals as low as $40. I know it's weathered, but I have a feeling it's worth a little bit more. Please let me know what you think... Thanks Edited by guebj00 06/13/2011 9:05 pm

$40, are you kidding me! Don't go back there. Those dealers are unethical. That coin is worth way more than $40. I would say your coin is a conservative G6, in fact, I'd go VG8. $525 and $565 are CDN bid and ask.. Yours would be worth slightly less than that IMO but not by much. $40...give me a break. BTW, ...that just got me a little hot. That's disgusting to me that dealers would offer you $40.

Thanks so much! I'm in the process of posting more...I appreciate all of the expertise...It's so easy to get deceived when you aren't a serious collector. :(

Wow, $40 for that coin should count as theft. You said that $40 was the lowest, what was the best offer and how many dealers made offers? Make sure you're going to a real coin dealer and NOT just a Gold/Silver buyer. Some of them don't even look at the coins you're selling. In most cases, they just offer the price based on silver the day you take it in. I sold 50 no date Standing Liberty quarters to a silver buyer and he never looked at one. I even talked to him about rare coins and he said he didn't have time to look at them, he just sends them out to be melted 99.9% of the time.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

The Best offer I got was $250. Of course, I liked the highest offer more...but I was still supicious that they might be low-balling me because I'm young and obviously not an experienced collector. At first though, they were only going to give me melt value until I asked them to look more closely at it. Check out the 1890 cc I just posted.

It reminds me of Pawn Stars where you have some expert, actually friends who get a cut of the money, comes in and tells them the item is worth $1000 and the pawn guy says, "I can give you $10 for it". Oh, sure!
