I don't know what the discolored parts on the cheek and nose are and they could make a big difference. As far as wear it looks similar to coins that I have that are graded NGC AU55

I agree, AU, if sent in the marks may prevent a MS if it was indeed MS. nice coin though.

I disagree. It does have some scuffs, but the blistering luster says MS to me. The scuffs and light rub on the cheek may knock it down to 58 at worst, but I can't see it going any lower than that. All the 55s I've owned don't even begin to have as much luster as this one. My guess would be MS-62.

like the coin but since I am not good at grading or even telling a fake from the real I have no idea. When I do get a indian, it will be slabbed as I hate worrying about if something I have is fake or not.

mkman, this coin we know has been in family possession since at least 1956...My wife remembers her grandmother showing it to her then.. It was kept between cotton wadding in a small box by her grandmother. just FYI

here a larger pics of same coin, maybe this helps.

to CCF.
AU-55 as stated wear on eagle and headress.
Not sure what the 'red' discolorization is.
Any ideas?
Could we get a close up?

the red area that you are seeing is the copper in the coin discoloring, so, its toning.

as for the grade, i'd put it barely at AU-55. those are some SERIOUS nicks and scratches on the reverse, but the obverse is quite nice.
