I am looking to start collecting commemoratives and want to know whic is better to collect the proofs or the unc coins. I want to buy the ones that will generally give the greatest return in price.

hard question to answer....proofs are often the more collected (due to premium packaging and mirror finish).....but sometimes the UNC's exceed the proofs in value based on availability and grade....so, it's hard to pinpoint a single one to collect.

get them all..... :)h

If you are a collector buy the ones that appeal to you. If you are an investor I would say the unc. would probably get you a better return for future sales but many now are at a high cost to get.

i would have to agree w/ muddler bigest thing is collect what YOU like to be honest I am picking up the UNCs because they are easier to photograph and the some of them the mintage numbers are crazy low compared to the proofs and I dont collect proofs as a norm and the commems I am collecting tie into my other coins I am collecting and they are what I like

First ... to the CCF. Pleased to have you here.

You have found a great forum ... filled with friendly folks ... all who willingly share their knowledge and joy on the various numismatic topics.

There are some true experts here (not me) ... and we all benefit from their insights.

Soooo ... to your question ... appears that you are referring to what are known as Modern Commemorative?

The "Modern" era began in 1982 with the US Mint issuing a Commemorative half dollar in honor of the 250th birthday of George Washington.

Coins of this "Modern" era were minted in both UNC and Proof state ... but I am no expert on this portion of the fabulous commemorative series.

Do know that there is an equally fabulous Classic US Silver commemorative series ... coins from 1892 to 1954. I know a bit more about those coins and can share some knowledge on that series if asked.

I suggest as the others have stated ... do some research and find the coins that appeal to you ... purchase them for the joy they will bring as you hold them ... consider investment potential as a secondary concern.

May I suggest a good book as your first investment?

"A Guide Book of United States Commemorative Coins" by Q. David Bowers. An Official Red Book Guide. Will cost you less than $20 and my copy is dog-eared from use.

Best wishes in your pursuit ... looking forward to seeing what you come up with and sharing with you whatever we can to support your new collecting venture.

David
