Poll Question
Are you hoarding copper pennies? I got this idea for the poll from the last post in the precious metals forum. Vote now.

Poll Choices
As a matter of fact I am!
No I don't think it is worth the money/space.

Don't really know much about cents, kinda throw them in a little jar on the counter along with all other change, and my wife rolls everything up and takes them to the bank occasionally, gives me a $10 or a $20. Which ones have this copper? What are they worth? I'm guessing you need a lot of them... And where do you take em when you have enough to be worth something?

1982 and before have copper in them. They are worth anywhere from 2-3 cents per penny depending on copper value. If copper continues to go up with PMs, then it could get to be worth more. Good return on investment; however, you need a ton of them :)

I save any BU Copper Cents I get (of course!), but hoarding Copper Cents in general requires massive amounts of space.

For hoarding, I prefer Nickels. Yes, I know, you get more copper for your money with pre-83 Cents, but the space issue...

A $100 bank box of Nickels has four times the face value of a $25 box of Cents, takes up only a little more space, and requires no sorting.

Even a box of BU 2011 Nickels is worth more in metal value than in face value.

I keep them, but then sell in $100 FV lots...my average sale price is $172. So far my profits have gotten me a 72 DDO #1 and a digital microscope w/camera and boom.No brainer.

If I could look into a magic ball and see that copper is headed down a similar road to silver, then I would hoard the penny's....

I personally don't much care for penny's or the space they require, Just not my angle to collect. I like coins in dollar or half dollar size, coins like quarters, dimes, and nickels don't interest me as much either, even though I do like certain designs like the Buffalo nickel, Mercury, etc..I do like some of the civil war Half Cents I have looked at as well, and the old Indian Head penny design, but I still have a hard time pulling the trigger on any coin that is not pure gold or silver or darn close to pure. I know that is the investing greed side, but I just figure money on anything other than my priority goal, is a personal set back....

Now then, if the coin was graded and you could show me a serious interest by large number of collectors, then that would also change my mind on collecting some of these coins with a lesser metal composite perhaps, but yet a high value based on age, date, shape, etc....

Now then like George who would not sell that stock even though Jerry got weak and sold, he reaped the benefits in the long run. I am sure some of you might do real well selling your copper penny's or whatever copper form on ebay down the road if you are not already like Maineman, and I will be the idiot wishing I had jumped on board, lol....

I voted no, and I started going through my bulk cent rolls, and I have just under 6 rolls of copper and just under 14 rolls of zinc. I don't see any more coppers in circulation.

edit: completed copper count

I'm sure some hoarding has begun up north as our penny will soon be no longer minted, so we need to keep some for future collectors.
