A guy who knows I collect coins and who once collected coins himself, asked me if I was interested in buying a "3 dollar bill". As far as I remember he said it was issued for Upper Canada around 1840 or so. According to him it is very rare.
I've seen references to 4 dollar bills but not a 3 dollar bill.
( he referred to it as a 3 dollar bill but I wonder if it wasn't a 3 pound note) anyway...
Anyone here ever hear of a 3 dollar bill and if so any idea of it's value?

We made the official switch to dollars in 1857, prior to that we used pounds like other colonies at the time though there was bitter wrangling over whether to adopt a sterling or Dollar currency from about 1840 on. Dollar notes pretedating that period were targeting US trade or in fact US based and denominated. Someone actually printed a 4.86 2⁄3 note that never saw circulation (basically a pound note with US fractional value). If anyone actually made a 3 dollar note it would of course have been a bank.

Pics or it didn't happen :) Seriously, be great to have a look at it, I'm curious as heck.

I've heard plenty of jokes involving 3 dollar bills, but never an actual one. Sounds interesting.

There's no pics, but this archived auction mentions a $3 note issued by the Bank of Upper Canada in 1820:

Quote:
...Bank of Upper Canada, Kingston, Three Dollars, 1820, 3759/B, CH-765E12-06, with "Payable at the Bank of Canada in Montreal" overprint....

Bank of Upper Canada $3
VG $75, F $100, VF $125,EF $200 , Unc $350 as per Charlton Can. Bank Notes 2002
I'd really want to know my old banknotes before I bought one of these , forgeries were common then and now.

I hear you West-Canuk I have an idea that the pic you posted is probably what he's talking about; and no I don't know nearly enogh about bank notes to make him an offer even though I quite sure he's legit. I would love to borrow it just to scan and post it here but I don't think he'd go for that.

By the way Ugly I have to say you sure seem to know your stuff, thanks for the input.
