According to this ebay seller, the coins he is offering came from ground zero. Supposedly they were picked-up and amassed by a first-responder who worked at the collapsed towers immediately after they fell. These coins are alleged to have been found among the debris.

If this is true, I'm thinking it's quite repulsive, even if the seller is saying that portions of the proceeds go to charity.

Other people's thoughts?

(BTW the sales are a violation of ebay policy. They've been reported by multiple people, yet ebay still hasn't removed the listings. http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies...ensive.html)

Wonderful... they're gone!

Were you directly responsible for having the listings removed?

Thanks,

Yes, a large number of coins and bullion were recovered from Ground Zero. No, they were not recovered by first responders who took time out from their search for bodies. The COMEX storage vaults were located in the underground complex below the WTC site, those vaults were one of the few surviving intact structures left after the collapse. The vaults were finally uncovered sometime in November and all of the PMs were loaded into armored carriers under heavy guard. The coins were sent to Collectors Universe(parent company of PCGS) for grading and slabbing with Ground Zero Recovery labels. I do not remember who handled the original sale of the coins but they are out there and perfectly legitimate.

Apparently you weren't able to read the auction listings. They were were not vault or PCGS coins. They were quarters in 2x2 cardboard flips. His description said that the coins had been picked up and pocketed by a first responder, who also happened to be a coin collector.

Yeah, the auctions had already been yanked by the time I looked. If that is what was stated, then those auctions deserved to be yanked
