I know next to nothing about these. I'm always really skeptical of any private California gold tokens. I know there are a lot of counterfeits out there.

My father has these three. They all weigh .68 grams each and are about 12.73 mm in diameter.

What do you think? Are these legit?

I have read that the ones with bears on them and those that are missing a denomination like "dollar" are modern "tokens" and at best are gold plated. Worth about $10 a hit. Sorry.

Check a RedBook, "Guide Book of U.S. Coins" by Yeoman. Look under "California Gold tokens" in the index. You can therein find written confirmation that these are half-baked replicas; this, lacking the denomination so as to avoid a counterfeit label. Sadly, many folks continue to lose hundreds of dollars buying these 1960-70's replicas at auctions and elsewhere. As I recall, the metal used was called goldine - a gold, lookalike.

I hear these referred to as charms. Were sold as souvenirs for many years and come in many different types. There are not to be confused with fractional California gold tokens though they look similar only in size.
