Last year a private dealer was going through a collection I herited and offered me over $200.00 on this 1957 US Philadelphia mint set in cello with no envelope. Been reading and researching on this set and cant understand why that number came from him when these sets I've reserched and seen are going for a lesser price. Sorry for the bad pics.

That is a Proof Set, not a Mint Set. I could see offering that kind of money if all of the coins were blazing deep cameo proofs but they are not and it appears to be an average proof set that should sell for around $30-35. The one exception would be if one of the coins was a rare die variety such as a doubled die. I cannot think of anything major that year off-hand but a perusal of a Cherrypicker's Guide might reveal something for 1957.

Thank you biokemist6 for your response really do appreciate it. Been doing some reading so would the steps on the nickel have anything to do with the value on this year?

New-To-Collecting,-But-Want-To-Learns value on this year?

Well it's really not uncommon for a Proof Nickel of this year to have Full Steps present. I can't imagine what would cause this man to offer that much for this set. Although it is a nice set. I know there are some BIE errors on the 1957 Pennies with a filled B in Liberty, but I'm not sure if that was the case on the proof pennies. Might have to ask the guy to find out...if he will reveal his reasons lol

The 1957 proof set is currently for sale at dealers for $36. The 1957 mint set is going for $281. That has the P and D sets of coins.

The 1958 mint set retails for $156. 1959 mint set for $66.

Looks like the 1957 mint set is the winner of the bunch.

There is no reason for a 1957 proof set that doesn't have some cameos in it to be worth $200. The only thing I can think of is the dealer goofed and thought it was a mint set.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I guess I should have sold that set only. But I didnt because of the overall offer he made on the complete collection. I feel I made a wise decision because I was just to new to this and really had no idea on the values. But since joining here you guys have taught me allot and starting to feel a little better prepared and I really do appreciate it. Still have a long ways to go, but this hobby has hooked me and I'm ready to jump on board and go for the hunt.
Thanks again
