Is this a fake? The rim just doesn't look right to me, so any expert opinions are appreciated.

Don't know about that, but it sure looks like someone used an ice pick to clean the coin sometime in the past. They really worked the surface over with something very sharp.

It might be genuine since someone tried to scratch the surface to see if it's plated on something. But it doesn't seem so. Well at least, it's worth it's gold bullion value

I have to agree, it looks as though it was done by the woman from 'Basic Instinct' with her trusty ice-pick!
