Wondering if someone has any explanation why a coin that seems to be so easy to find in general (lots on ebay and other sites for sale) seems to command such a premium? I know the mintage is listed at only around 200k but there seems to be no lack available.

Well, I suppose it's the same argument you can make for the 1948 silver dollar. Only 19K minted but any time you want one, E-bay has tons for sale, every auction House has 'em at any given time. Dealers always have 'em in stock, then why are they worth soo much in trends? But the one thing that the 1884 nickel has over the '48 dollar is that there are less than 10 known I.C.C.S. examples in Mintstate and after the grade of EF-40, there are only a handful known.
Try finding an 1884 nickel in AU-50 or higher, you won't have that problem with a '48 dollar!!
