Great photo! I wish I could get pics like that.
However, Buggs, that looks like probable post mint damage ( PMD) to me.

Thanks everyone. Got this hand held microscope recently been having allot of fun going through the collection with it. Microscope is a little stronger than I wanted but picks up some nice details.

It is a circulation mark( PMD)

Ah I stand corrected. I thought there was a chance it was a planchet flaw.

IMHO this 1943-S Jefferson grades VG8 ... and the 'split' in the 3 of the date is damage that occurred while circulating for all these years.

Agreed that the damage happened many years ago ... the coin has re-toned well over the affected area ... but it is still PMD.

I have asked myself what could have caused that damage to the 3 digit in circulation over the years in that very specific tiny area. Any thoughts?
