Hi Everyone, I don't collect coins but the tenant downstairs moved out and left this coin in a pot of pennies. I have no clue what it is but did some research and it seems it may be worth something. If you can let me know what shape its in and whether it has any value that would be amazing. Sorry for my poor picture skills. Any help would be great! Thank you!

to the community. This is a Capped Bust half dollar struck from 1807 to 1839, there are several of us here that collect this coin type because of it's beauty and numerous strike varieties. A collector could devote their life time and still not complete the entire series. Your coin is a very nice example and would grade at EF-45. (extra Fine). The value is based on it's variety and rarety. A general value for this coin is in the range of $125.

It looks good but also check to make sure there is edge lettering on the side, that almost certainly guarantees it to be genuine. I wish I could find coins like that in a pot of pennies BTW, your pictures are better than those of most first-timers. They are nicely sized and most importantly, focused.

Quote: A general value for this coin is in the range of $125 I'm curious how you came to this value? You are much more knowledgeable than I on the bust series, so please correct me. Numismedia quotes $330 at XF-40 and $540 at AU-50. They tend to be a little bit high, but I agree with XF-45 and solid for that grade which should make this a solid $300+ coin unless I'm missing something.

BTW, welcome damianm2! This is quite a remarkable find, and what is even better is that the coin looks original and uncleaned! Please DO NOT attempt to clean it if you are tempted, this will destroy the value. Hopefully this neat find will get you more interested in coin collecting!

First off big price jump between VF-20 and XF-40. I think your looking at a VF-35 coin. But thats only my guess. I look at photograde and the A.N.A. standards. And I'm very strict with my grading SOOOOOOOOOO. To determine are value you will need to know Overton num.(die mairage).

There is indeed lettering on the outer edge, "fifty cents of half a dollar" (I think).
Thank you everyone for your help, I don't quite understand all the letters and grading numbers but I will be sure to pick up a book or read up about it on the computer.
Thanks!

Johnny, I'm basing my price on what a dealer would pay which is much less that the current book value.

Beautiful coin. Both the 125 wholesale and 300+ retail prices are reasonable.

Increasingly, local dealers are having to mark their coins at or 10-20% higher than dealer pricing in order to move inventory. NEVER pay 200% or 300% premiums over grey sheet regardless of what numismedia, etc... speculate a coin is worth. That is like a broker charging you $10,000 in commission to buy a $5,000 stock. Absurd.

I primarily use auction values to get an idea of what a coin is worth. What would the greysheet be for this coin in the XF-AU range?
