I'm new to collecting. Actually started just buying junk silver. But have got the bug.

Went to a very nice coin shop last week and picked up a few nice items along with a Red Book.

I've also purchased some proof & uncirculated Eagles on ebay. But, the prices for most I see there are more than the Red Book lists them for.

How do you tell if you are paying too much, or within range. Is there another book I should get.

Thanks in advance. Have a list of questions. But, this one might help with some of the rest.

I think I may have just found an answer after finally finding some time to start reading old posts elsewhere.

What prompted this question to begin with was this, and I'm not really sure here where to post so here I go. Boy do I have a lot to learn.

If you purchase from the Mint and then have a coin graded does that grading then make the coin worth more? Does one take into account the cost to ship and grading also when pricing their graded coins?

Thanks,
Teena

The Red Book generally states retail prices of coins and should not be used as a price guide to buy and sell coins. Numismedia can be a useful online resource but I generally use a combination of Numismedia and the Coin Dealer Newsletter or CDN.
A coins worth is ultimately what you are willing to pay for it then there is supply and demand which will affect
a coins FMV.

The RedBook is pretty much worthless for pricing gold and silver eagles because the average pieces (Less than 70's) fluctuate with the spot price of the metals while the book shows a value at one snapshot of time. Both silver and gold are up considerably since the most recent RedBook was compiled.

Numismedia has been very helpful today! Did take a quick look at the Coin Dealer Newsletter, only long enough to see that it might be too expensive for me right now. Liked the free feature of Numismedia. Thanks!
