Looks like the person took the picture in black and white. Coin is heavily polished. Coin should weigh about 11.6600 grams and a diameter of 30.79 mm. Not an expert on these coins so without the weight and diameter can't tell you for sure if it's real, sorry. Hope the information helps and maybe you can ask the seller for the weight and diameter.

AlmostCollectible First of all I completely agree with mmorgan22 the coin has been polished as if for jewelry. It is not in my opinion a collectable coin. The coin even if a rare date would be compromised.

However, the question is
Quote:
Is this coin genuine?

That is a different issue. I will try to help.

When looking for counterfeits on ebay (especially the ones where the seller KNOWS what he/she is selling) I always closely examine out of focus pictures. Here the B&W out of focus pictures seem to be intentional.

So I checked his other auctions - he can do better with the focus his other items prove that.

He has a VERY low feedback level so that red flag is present, but he could be a new guy as well.

But - the coin is likely REAL but my opinion on the "coin" value here is minimal.

Good point. I don't think I'll be bidding on that one. The picures just don't make it desirable.

Many collectors that I know from India like their old coins shining. I have personally seen my uncle take a whole bag, a whole bag of silver coins to the silver smith for a polish. He was a jeweler, got a ~ 5 kg bag of silver coin from a customer and had it all polished. Unlike here in the US, many do not like their coins in pristine uncleaned condition. Whenever you buy a raw coin from India, always check the coin for cleaning/ dipping/ polishing.

I saw a very beautiful set of victorian silver coins at an auction at the Baldwins. It had amazing mint luster and I was very excited to buy it. On closer examination of the high resolution pictures, I noticed that the coins were all cleaned. It was heart-breaking :)

brokencompass I am personally not bothered much by cleaning coins that have NO surface luster left after long periods of circulation. It should not be a factor for coins lower than high VF. But removal of traces of luster by abrasive polishing makes it hard to authenticate most coins. Many coins after cleaning incorrectly can easily be confused with forgeries so I would never advise cleaning a rare coin.

What really bothers me with reference to "cleaning" are the TPGs that use "hairlines" as an excuse for not grading a coin. Hairlines which they often see as a death sentence for a coin, are a simple fact of life and can result from a coin being in a cloth pocket as well as intentional cleaning.

Cleaning should never be an excuse for not grading a coin - but it should move EVERY cleaned coin to VF level at best. The standard definition of Extra Fine includes a reference to a substantial portion of the mint luster remaining. So if a coin has no mint luster as a result of dipping or any other cause it starts as a VF pure and simple.
