I noticed something while looking at this Pic I took of a 1901 Indian Head cent. It looks like the letter S in the feathers on the head dress. Is this something normal on all Indian Head cents? I've never noticed it before. Although I do have a 1904 Indian that has a L in this same place. I know the L was added in 1864 which was the designers initial for Longacre, but what could the S be, I can't find anything on it anywhere. Edited by BrokaToe 06/19/2011 11:40 pm

I think it's just the ordinary sideways Longacre "L", with serifs on it's left (i.e. the top) edge making it slightly resemble a vertical "S".

Look like the ordinary "L" to me. It looks like there wasn't a full strike or perhaps some small damage or even toning that led this to resemble an "S."

Yah, I think bibd and DavidZerbato are right, after looking at it closer under magnification I believe it is just the L with a little marking in just the right place to make it look this way. But I mean to tell ya, it really looks like a S, it's quite the optical illusion. Good eyes folks, thanks for the help on this one!

You had me fooled that it was an "S" for a few minutes too!

But that date looks like it's repunched from here to China, what a beaut!
