Hello, I would like to confirm that I licked out last night by finding a strapless version of the 1955 Canadian cent. If this attached coin does indeed turn out to be the rare strapless version, please indicate the grade and approximate value in US $s of this coin. I apologize but I did not have time to clean the dirt off of this coin using liquid detergent and water. Thanks, mdpmedia

I meant to write 'lucked out': not 'licked out'.

No pro here but isn't that line on the back of the bust a strap? John

In the strapless version the I in DEI should point between a denticle and be flared more top and bottom In my only opinion this is not a No Shoulder Version Sorry mdpmedia

'Mary Gillick' and you will get a better idea on how the strapless image come about. Mary Gillick, as most of us may know, was the designer of the first type of Elizabeth 11 bust.
The idea that the image is strapless give s rise to the idea that good old queen Bess may have been wearing a strapless gown for the for image.
The strap does in fact appear on early versions of the of the Gillick bust if the coin is very well struck up. The problem is that it is usually faint, to the extent that it does not appear on weakly struck coins. The design was modified slightly to correct this problem.
If you look closely at the bodice on the example shown, there is bump on Her Maj's chest, which is part of clothing. There is also a vertical fold line of material on Her back, as was noticed by John1.
In some British Commonwealth Countries such as New Zealand, coins from the first master die 'strapless' version are scarce.

Your photo is good enough to determine the obverse type. Here are some diagnostic pics: with cdn44fan; yours is a SF/strap version.

Excellent work DV on the visually graphic comparison. Because of the way my mind works this type of illustration really hits home insofar as effectively differentiating between the two types. I actually wasted about 30 minutes last evening attempting to find something similar on the net with no luck.

I hear ya--sometimes the internet is a mosh pit of useless or conflicting information. I usually get far superior results using the forum's search feature
