Please take a look at this Cent and tell me if you think it was struck more than just one time. The Obverse has an area that look like "steps." Was this caused by multiple strikes? The flat area is FLAT.

Coop,

Thanks for the answer. The reason I though it could have more than one strike was the "steps" that lead down to the final flat area. I had one other coin, it was Die Struck, with the first strike off by about 90% and the second off by about 80%. The way I could tell was that both strikes left a curve in the die struck area with 2 levels of thickness. This was the only other coin I've seen with the different levels of thickness and the only one with steps instead of slide marks where the coin was pushed away from the die.

Bags and bags... and friends who have friends that roll coins from those bags for banks. While all error should be pulled and returned to the Mint, some people that work for the companies that roll coins (I'm not going to say any names) have ways of getting errors to coin dealers and collectors. I've pulled a few coins from bags, but I had a dealer that sold me most of my errors.

The dealer I bought from said the guy wouldn't give his name, but would come in a couple of times a year with a few hundred errors. He did this for years and then just vanished, never to be seen again. They didn't know if he got caught or just moved on. I checked the other coin dealers in the Dallas area, but they almost never had errors.

I got one bag of 1974-D Cents on ebay and found that 99% of them had heavy die clash and over polished dies. I bought tubes to put the coins in and found that only 48 Cents would fit in each tube. I also found that the $50.00 bag had $56.24 (original post on this bag is https://goccf.com/t/89269 )

This 1981 cent was double-struck. The second strike was off-center and uniface (struck against another planchet). You can see the T of TRUST and the top of the first or last digit of the date on the obverse face of the second strike.

Thanks Mike! I'm still learning how errors are made. I'll stop guessing and just ask from now on. (I don't want to look too stupid.)

and BPOC1, No, not a find. I bought this one on ebay, but didn't see the uniface edge was curved out instead of in until I took a photo.
