This probably a newbie question. I have noticed a red patina on a number of Lincolns like that on the one below.

Is this a good or a bad thing?

Is this common? Is there a specific cause other than reacting to an unknown environment?

Yes it is very common just due to the fact that this is made of copper and the oxidation on it.

It seems to be more pronounced(or at least more obvious)on woodgrain cents! Yours has a beautiful woodgrain look.
