Nice BT! Thanks. I thought this a nicer example than the previous 94 DER.

I don't think grease was involved nor are the steps worn. What you see are die scratches where a clash is being removed.

Look at this flipped version. That's our boy.

The coin is weakly struck. You're correct, it has nothing to do with grease or wear. If you look at an overlay image, you'll see the areas that are weak on the reverse are the high points on the obverse.
