I was planning on starting a collection of the normal circulating coins of the EU. Have there already been design changes from the originals minted in 1999? Or are they still generally pretty much the same, besides the date of course.

Mostly still the same. There have been a couple of circulating commemoratives (eg. the Greece 2004 Olympics coins) but otherwise unchanged.

There is a new obverse design that will gradually come into use in the various countries ove rthe next few years. The EU has expanded well past the boundaries drawn on the map shown on the old coins; the new designs show a borderless Europe.

Sap is right; here are images of the current circulation coins:
http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance...mages_en.htm

These are the commemorative €2 coins issued so far*:

These are the new common sides that the euro countries will use as from next year (some member states switch in 2007, some in 2008):

* The coin at the bottom is a €2 commem that all EU euro countries will issue next year. Same common side, same obverse design but country specific text ...

I bought myself a Dansco 7400 (for the original 12 countries...96 coins in all) and a set of unc Portugal euros :). It's really cool how each country gets to make their own designs and stuff.

One question, Yavaris, I think the Dansco already includes the Portugal euros, why do you buy another set ? There is 2 version of Portugal euros ?

There is also a small state (Vatican) that already changed "non common side" twice, due to the change of Pope.
The first change has been due to the period between two Popes, usually called "Sede Vacante", second change due to the new Popes "Benedetto XVI", anyway they are visible at the same site reported above http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance...s_vat_en.htm
