It obviously was not changed from the Ike dollar to the SBA because of looks. Yeesh! The SBA dollar has to be the UGLIEST coin the US ever produced. The size was just too big for people to accept. Not that most people accept the smaller dollar coin any more now ...
Alright I have to say it. I understand and appreciate that it has been a symbol of liberty and freedom and I know as a symbol it is a work of art and has done much for america specifically and humanity in general and nothing against the model but... Why did the statue of liberty have to look like a man? I mean I know standards of beauty change somewhat with time and maybe beauty is not as important as other concepts but I've seen plenty of examples of beautiful women in pictures and art at the time period and before and...well just look at her. Okay maybe I should just shut up.

Quote: They were impractically large and nobody used them, other than casinos. It wasn't that the Eisenhower dollar was too big for us... it was that we were too small for it. And, not that it's got anything to do with the topic but... Lady Liberty is quite beautiful, thanks.

When my dad saw the SBA for the first time, he thought it looked like Washington with a bad hangover.

Simple answer, money. We had paid for a study (this was the second time) that concluded that if they made a smaller size dollar and discontinued the dollar note the coin would circulate and save the government money. The smaller size meant material costs were one third that of the Ike dollar, and the smaller size meant a longer die life which would also save money, and they would save money from not having to print the dollar notes. So they went ahead and approved the smaller dollar and did away with the Ike. Problem was they didn't stop printing the notes so they didn't save that money. And since there were still notes the small dollars didn't circulate. Since they made so many of these non circulating dollars they didn't save on material costs. And since they made so many coins they had to make more dies and didn't save money from the longer die life either.

Quote: At least Ike will get his chance to be on a decently-sized coin in a few years. True, but I will always love the big Eisenhower dollar the most. Quote:The SBA dollar has to be the UGLIEST coin the US ever produced. You have obviously never seen this monstrosity.

Ikes are one of my faves! When I was a child, the compamy my Dad worked for would send us kids a Christmas card every year with an Ike in it. I loved getting those!
Many collectors hate Ikes, and I guess that's OK. It takes all types. Of all the dollar coins produced since the Ike, I'd have to say I like the sack dollar the best. The reverse is really cool on that coin. I do not like the presidnetial dollar.
I think Ikes are still too new, and that's why many collectors dismiss them. But think about these two points:
1.The Ike is the probably the last "large" dollar that will ever be struck for circulation.
2. Silver proof and uncirculated Ikes in nice condition are more rare than most people think. TONS of them got melted in 1980 when silver went to $50.00/oz.
Get 'em now while they are reasonable!

Quote: That will make four portraits on three large size dollars. I know it is late, but I assume you are counting the two portraits on the 1990 Commemorative, which I have in my 1990 Prestige Proof Set. An uncirculated version is also a candidate for the 7070.

Yes, that's why I said four portraits on three large coins. (His fifth portrait will be a little later on the small President dollar.)

Very good. I was just making sure I knew what you were talking about. I was actually a bit more tired than I thought when I decided to hop online.
