They were impractically large and nobody used them, other than casinos.

Because Jimmy Carter signed a new law in October of 1978 (Public Law 95-447; 31 USC 324b-1) cited as the " Susan B. Anthony dollar Coin Act of 1978". edit: Just refreshed and noticed jbuck's reply...yeah...that's it. ;)

I am going with the people are idiots thing. No practical reason IMO. Just as there is NO practical reason that there are still one dollar bills being made and used. IDIOTS.

It's not because of idiots (well not entirely) but because the Gov is filled with TOO MANY people that can't agree on anything, so they choose the better of the worse so to speak. Also many of them think they are the ONLY ones qualified to make any decisions so they will NEVER agree with anyone else.
Thus, nothing really useful ever gets done. That's why many countries choose a dictator, except now the person in power gets money hungry and ruins the country...

I agree with shrinking the dolla coin if they are going to make it out of worthless metals but not the desire to railroad SBA on it for the sake of PC. Same with the Sackies, I mean they don't even know what she looks like so you might as well make it into something we'd enjoy staring at.

I just thought of something. If the Ikes saw their greatest use in casinos, I wonder if one could still get some Morgan or Peace dollars from a casino cashier in the '70's for the dollar slots. A man told me once that when he was playing the half dollar slots, it was still not unheard of to receive in addition to the clad coins, silver Kennedys and Franklins from the cashier or the machine itself.

We sons of Kansas are frowning at GO's answer. Tsk.
However, those clad cartwheels indeed were too big and unwieldy. At least Ike will get his chance to be on a decently-sized coin in a few years.

It obviously was not changed from the Ike dollar to the SBA because of looks. Yeesh! The SBA dollar has to be the UGLIEST coin the US ever produced. The size was just too big for people to accept. Not that most people accept the smaller dollar coin any more now ...
