I have tried looking online but I have unsuccessful. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places. When penny's are graded in MS condition you either see MS-60B MS-64RB MS-64R.

What is the difference between RB and R.

I'm sure that RB means Red-Brown and are just means Red but how can you actually tell which is which.

Thanks.

The pictures aren't the best, but the description is good.

Thanks for the article.

I think its crazy because the first coin looks brown to me, and the second coin looks red. its really crazy how it works.

In searching penny rolls, I've noticed that 'full red' coins are more of a uniform, light-pink color. As they age, they turn more pumpkin colored (the 85% in that link). Then they start picking up patches of brown (Red-Brown designation) then move to full brown. That 95% picture they show isn't a very good example. Go pick up a brand new roll of 2011's to get a better example. I believe that different coins have different standards as to what constitutes red. Obviously a pure copper coin is going to have a different 'red' color than a copper/zinc/tin mix. In the early days of lincoln wheats and older, the consistency of the copper was pretty poor so coins could vary widely in their metallic makeup even in the same year.

It's my understanding that cents are now 100% copper coated around a zinc core. And you're right in that an alloy has a slightly different hue than a pure metal. For that reason, I wouldn't use 2011 cents as my 'model' to compare against if I'm looking at older coins.

Compare like to like.
