I bought this earlier today and although the seller did not say it is a fake, I bought it as a fake as it looks cast. However....there are two accidental damage marks on the elephant side of which one reminds me of the rock on Mars. These are the auction pictures and I have enhanced the one mark. Does anyone know when this copy may have been made (it looks old)....and what do you think of the damage mark.. Edited by D 07/01/2011 10:20 pm

I would guess it was made in the early to mid 1800's and yes, it appears to be cast copy. What does it weigh? The scrape was made much more recently.

vermontensium... thanks for the input and I certainly hope you are correct with the date range as I had no idea when it would have been made. I should get it in about 2 - 3 weeks and I will post the weight.. Here's a picture of one I just found online certified by PCGS.

BTW, there are only three known example of the "God Preserve New England" variety so if yours was the real deal, you would have an extremely rare token. Electrotypes do exhist of these tokens, but yours appears to be more cast.

Sorry guys..my mistake for not posting both sides of the certified token..It is the Carolina Token Wth Proprietors reverse as this picture shows. So far the only reference I have found is this description of the Robinson New England copy. Looks like the dates are different.

Mid 1800's made sense. Coin collectors have been around awhile!

Update with new pictures... Having this in hand it does not look like a cast copy as there in no noticeable sharp edge or filing marks, over lapping etc. There is how ever what appears to be enviromental conditions with pitting and it has little bumps (for lack of a better word) As for size and weight I found this info: "It appears the tokens were neither made for nor intended for circulation in the American colonies. Indeed, the exact use of these pieces is unknown. They may not have been used as coins at all because of the great weight differentials between thick and thin planchets; some are over 200 grains, far in excess of the 152 grain halfpenny, while other much below the standard at 110 grains or less." All opinions are appreciated...

At a show, I saw a certified VF coin that everyone was sure was fake, and the more they looked at it, the better it looked. I would at least run it by one of the TPG tables at a big show, and see if it is either clearly thumbs up or down.

Thanks biggfredd... ...I am considering sending it to a TPG but would like opinions first as some one just may see some thing I missed either way...
