I picked up a dansco State Quarter folder today @ a yard sale. In the folder there are 17 silver proof State Quarters. It appears the former collector took these quarters from silver mint proof sets and moved them to the dansco. In the process he touched the face of all coins and they thus have fingerprint markings. I do not see any damage/scratches as far as that is concerned, however I'm curious how much this will effect value , or if they're only worth melt now. I got a great deal on it ,so even @ melt I'm pretty well off.

If the prints are "fresh" I think a quick dip in acetone will remove them. If that doesn't work they are worth only melt.IMHO John1

They'd be within a year (Just a estimate) I can always try one and test.
How much would print-free coins be worth over those with prints?

Melt is around $6.50 per silver quarter. Most State Quarters sell in the range of $7-12. The expensive years you want to keep an eye for is 1999 and 2001. Most '99s are $30 & up, and '01s are about $12-$15. It just goes to show that with proofs you have got to use cotton gloves especially with inserting them into the holes. With pristine proof coins, I never use albums, only Air-Tite brand holders. The government issued capsules are poor substitutes, and should be discarded and replaced with a proper sized Air-Tite holder.

It sickens me to look at the coins , several were not touched on the face side and are very obvious DCAMs but the obverse has a thumbprint :(
Thanks for the ideas on dates, I knew '99s were rare but not '01s, there are a few '01s in the holder.

Bizybackson, you made reference to the government issues capsules. Are you referring to a specific type or all of them in general? I thought the looked pretty solid. Assuming you are referring to their proof holders as in ASE's.

Landude, I saw your thread about the storage options for the 5 oz. uncirculated ATB pucks and proof ASE. If they work for you in your Lighthouse box, I see no reason for you to switch. Cosmetically and practically, the government capsules are a mess. On the top half of the capsule, there is a ridge of plastic around the outside circumference. The inside of the ridge collects grease and dust, and on a pristine proof *can* look like handling marks. They are quite difficult to pry apart, and most times, the coins (especially the silver dollars) are firmly anchored to the base. They also do not stack well, which is odd, considering that there is a raised rim on the base of the holder. There are no other options that I know of in the aftermarket that hold multiple OGHs aside from the Lighthouse box you described. The topper for me has been the 5 oz. ATB pucks: a $280 coin should not rattle in its holder! On the other hand I've used Air-Tite holders for 25 years now, the BU Morgans I've had since then still look the same as the day I bought them. Whereas I've seen silver proof coins tone in OGP capsules, so all of my proof ASEs are in the ringed Air-Tites. I have a few boxes of discarded OGPs for when I sell the item and the seller wants the OGP and they sell for more with the original packaging and COA.

I have all the coins except the 1999 and 2001 silver proof sets, which I intended to buy from the bay with my ebay bucks I earned over the last quarter. Yes, I have enough for both and the three book set is complete. I have already start my walker book (Dansco) and only have eight spots left.......

Oops, forgot to reply to the original question. I'd try the acetone and then distilled water first. Depending on how drastic the prints are and the amount of and type of oil, you might be able to salvage them. Whatever you do, don't wipe them with a cloth. If you really don't care for them after the soak, I'm sure one of us on the forum would love to have them. As stated, the 99s are tough to come by right now. I'm right behind you freedom. I had two complete sets of P&D State Quarters when my son remarried and now I've picked up two more grand sons. My 2 "S" silver proof and proof sets will have to be for my sons. I think the cost to complete 6 of everything will be prohibitive. I have started 6 ATB albums though. The silver proof and proof sets are really spectacular. I just hope they don't tone too badly in the Lighthouse albums.

Thanks for the info, I bought this set to subsidize the others I bought from this seller, I have no interest in moderns at all (outsize of 5oz atbs).
