I have had these 2 coins for several years and cant seem to find much if any information on these gold plated SBA's. The coins come in a cardboard like single fold case with american treasury mint papers along with registration numbers. They state "first-day-of-issue minting on july 2, 1979." I've searched the web only to find single coins without the papers I have with mine, and most are not gold plated. So who can tell me about these, and how many were produced? thank you

I don't know anything about SBA collecting, but I'm willing to guess that these were plated by a private company and were sold at quite a profit. Sort of like how the State Quarters were plated in gold and sold on the TV shopping channels.

Sadly these were altered after the mint by a private company. They are worth face value as the gold plated doesn't add any real value to them.

I would agree, not only does the gold plating not add any real value to them, but in collector's eyes, they are damaged. They can be a fun novelty though, so if you like them, enjoy them.
