I have spent hours here in the background reading and looking at pics to gain knowledge. But now I'm a little confused about RPM or PMD. They look very similar but what is a sure fire difference that I'm missing?
Rest in Peace

After I posted I considered MD. The only thing I couldn't grasp about it is in such a small area as the mintmark, how can it damage the right outside edge of the "D" without also damaging the right inside loop of the "D". But John is better with varieties than I am and I trust his judgement more than mine. Buggs, PMD (Post Mint Damage) is just some form of damage after it left the mint. I think what you are possibly getting confused about is RPM vs MD. Machine Doubling is damage caused by a variety of possible problems and in this case I think John was specifically thinking of Strike Doubling which is typically caused by a loose die. The die can then move while still being in contact with the coin and will cause damage such as what you see on your mintmark. One characteristic of this damage is the devise which is your D will not look completely formed at the area in question. Notice how the right side of your D is thinner than it should be? An RPM would produce a partial secondary image of a D to the right of a normal sized D.

From die movement during the strike. Often the mint mark is higher than the other devices and get damaged after/during the strike. The damage is flat shelf like and a RPM is rounded and enlarges the devices.

I know this sounds like a basic question too allot of others but I'm in training. So I can understand, the mint mark was struck once then again to the west?

No, the 1962 quarter was struck once but there was slight movement of the die during striking which caused the Machine Doubling.
