I'm in the market for a 1914-D cent Is it safe to buy one on ebay that is not graded? I haven't done too much research, but it seems like I can get one for $200-250. I'm just looking for one that is in Good or Very Good condition. I don't think I could afford more than that. What is important to think about when purchasing a 1914-D cent in "not great" condition? Thanks.

Personally, I would only buy that coin "sight unseen" from someone on CCF. IMO

I purchased my PCGS VG10 on ebay with no problems. Great seller, great coin! Just make sure he offers a return policy and his feedback is 99-100% Do not buy this coin uncertified under any circumstances. Many fakes out there.

It's scary buying the 14-D and 09-S VDB unslabbed due to the counterfeits floating around. And they are even making up fake slabs also, so now it's just plain tricky period! Especially on ebay... Amida17's advice is good. As is purchasing the coin from either a known dealer or preferably, slabbed. But you definitely are best to do some research on the counterfeit issues with this coin. I bought a slabbed VG-8 (graded by ANACS) that I liked as it passed all the known authenticity tests and has great eye appeal - no rim dings, corrosion or staining. Then I got a G4 to G6 14-D in circulation a couple of weeks ago that I cannot part with. So I will be selling my slabbed 14-D VG-8 in the next week or two. I just have to check out the site protocols for selling and get the coin photographed. Update - I just checked the site protocols and I cannot sell or buy for a while! But I will be putting up on ebay...

Actually, If you have access to a coin show, that would be another great place. If you know nothing about the diagnostics of this particular coin, then yes, you may want to stick to a reputable dealer or here on the CCF.

You may be able to convince me to buy a graded one online if there was a clear return policy, but that is a very unlikely scenario for me.

I agree with jbuck 100%. Most importantly.....DO NOT BUY A RAW 1914-D FROM ebay! IMO, the 14-D is the most important coin in a Lincoln collection. If you're going to acquire one, then make sure it's a nice one and slabbed. These are TRULY rare coins, the rarest of the Lincoln Cent series. They are more difficult to find than the SVDB, especially at EF and up. Set aside your money and TAKE YOUR TIME....wait for the right coin to come along. This is a purchase that should never be rushed.

great advice from our last two posters. I lean toward coin shows myself, as you may be able to see many at a decent sized show in one sitting. It's always good to learn the diagnostics for key dates in any series you might collect, and better if you can see the coin in hand before making the purchase, imo

Do not buy raw from ebay. There are plenty of slabbed 1914-D's out there in the grade and price range that you are looking for. There is just no need to take the risk.

Quote: They are more difficult to find than the SVDB, especially at EF and up I completely agree. In my quest for the perfect 1914-D for my collection, I have come across several 1909-S VDB cents to choose from. I have even been tempted by one, but I have it set in my mind to buy that coin last (even after I find something to fill that evil 1922-D "Plain" hole).

I rarely see them for sale and on the rare occassion I do see one, it's usually not pleasant. If I was starting a new Lincoln collection, this is definately the first key date I'd be shopping for. The others are pretty easy to find. Here's where you need to go my friend! http://www.worldsfairofmoney.com/

I would love to go! I am originally from the Chicago area and have a cousin that lives in Rosemont (free lodging). However, with my schedule it does not appear to be doable this year. I am resolved to go eventually. I have not been to Chicago since 1998.

The two "above" fellows are acutely aware of my recent troubles in purchasing a raw '14 D...... I'm still waiting to get it back from ANACS to see if it's a counterfeit or legitimate. When buying a key or semi-key....definately take your time and buy it "slabbed" for goodness sake ! .....

You guys have finally convinced me to have my 14-D certified; and my 31-S, and a few others to meet the minimum order through ANACS (no club to join) which I believe is five coins.
