In about a week I'm off on vacation to Florida to the beach on the Gulf side. I wish it was the Eastern side, oh well. My brother has a Minelab SE Pro metal detector that I've convinced him to let me take with me to comb the beach.

I've never done any metal detecting before. So I figured I'd ask the folks here if they can offer any advise on how to increase my chances of finding something.

Practice before you take your trip. Learn the sounds of the MD for different items such as all the denominations of coins and then silver and gold jewelry. Double check and make sure that you have permission to hunt on the beach. Usually you will only need permission on private beaches, but I'm not from around there. It doesn't hurt to look into it. Hopefully your brother is letting you borrow a sand scoop too. If you have a regular shovel it will take a long time to dig and usually holes will get washed out by then or start collapsing into itself. Sand scoops are a lot easier. Also, try to go detecting when the tide is low, you will have a better chance of finding goodies close to the shoreline. Other than that, good luck hunting! Make sure to fill your holes.

take a coin or two and a ring....bury them right in front of you and test the detector and how it reacts to them....after about 15 or 20 mins understanding what the detector is telling you, you'll be ready!

good luck! let us know how it goes when you get back!

I've taken the advise from Lowlife. Thanks, I've tuned my Minelab SE for coins, gold, and silver. For the gold I used a 10k, 14k, and 18k rings as examples.

I've been searching Liddo beach sporadically for a couple days now and I've found zilch. On the other hand, walkways to the beach have yielded several dollars in change.

I actually got disappointed when I learned the history of the development of this island.

If I don't get lucky and find a recently lost gold ring, I won't find anything much. Oh well, at least the kids are having a blast helping me find treasure.

I've changed my primary goal from seeking gold, too seeking very perfect sea shells .

So far, I'm doing very well in that endeavor. At my current pace, I could have purchased an old American Chiefs daughter and a prominent place in the tribe in another couple weeks. In modern money I will have some nice keepsakes from my vacation, worth about....nothing. But my kids love them, and that is priceless.

Hey Chadwick...lived in Sarasota for 21 yrs. before moving back to the great white north. Lido beach is ok, but have you gone to Siesta Key yet? Sand there is incredible...pure white and squeeks if you walk or run fast enough. At any rate, at Siest there is MUCH more activity...much. Volleyball nets and tourneys all the time. Easy to dig there and with more activity, more to hunt. Also, try to find a spot to enter at Longboat, which is north of Siesta...actually over the bridge. Lots of private areas there but LOTS of rich people. Might have trouble getting access exactly where you want but probably better stuff. Good luck!!
