There is an online coin dealer who happens to live in my town, but who is not interested in dealing with me in person. Should I be suspicious that he is not above board?

I could see it either way..

1) It's a lot easier to hide stuff in photos and capture the coin the way you want to.
2) He could just be young, have cancer, or have a myriad of other reasons to not want to deal with people face to face.
3) Perhaps he's just that much of an intravert and doesn't have the people skills to be successful in a B&M?

I think as long as he had a good return policy, i'd give him a shot.

It is probably for his own protection more than anything.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions as maprince said...but, maybe he just doesn't have the physical presentation to show off and sell coins.

On the other hand, he could be trying to be shady with his sales.

I have a local coin shop that also does the same thing. They said they do online sales only. Would seem to cut down on some overhead as you wouldn't need display cases and pay for staff that has to deal with some people who stay for hours and spend a dollar. If they have a good return policy then there shouldn't be much to worry about. If they are trying to hide something and you receive the coin, just send it right back. It would actually hurt their business more to try to hide something because one bad transaction would cause buyers to never return.

Actually I browsed the site and told him the ones I wanted to buy, but that I didn't want to pay shipping and wanted to get them sooner, so I don't know. However he wants to do things I guess is up to him.

I contacted an ebay seller who lives in small town that I drive through when I go to see my parents. I asked him if he has a physical store and that I would like to stop and see some of his coins. He said that he was not set up that and only sells online. He has a good inventory, good return policy, and excellent feedback, so I agree with mmorgann22 that he probably is just trying to eliminate overhead. I will continue to buy from him on line.
