I was looking through a bag of 90% and came across this strange 1942 merc dime. At first I thought I found a 42/41 but when I looked at it through the loop I saw something different. It doesn't have and tool markings like a botched fake. Is thus a double or maybe a new variety? Any insight is greatly appreciated. It almost looks like a 4/2 because the sharp straight line instead of more curvy like a 2

looks like a die chip to me. Can you crop your original picture and upload it again?

Can I speculate here, just a thought.

Most probably wrong, but the bottom of that '2' looks like an inverted '7'.

I have to say, that would be an improbable way of re cutting a date, but that is just what was done with medieval coins. The top of the '2' is just badly out of position.

When the Mint staff were working their butts off during WW2, the need to get work done would have been critical, hence the probable sloppiness of the workmanship.

As they say on Mythbusters: "Plausible".

It looks like Post Mint Damage to me rather than a die chip, not missing any element around the 2.
Also the descender length of the '2' would be too long for a inverted '7'.
A better picture would be needed to determine what may have cause it. IMHO!
